You may have already fixed it, but.. I had the same… damn.. ISSUE.. for sooo long, and the only firmware update was for the HP OEM.. anyway.. I just found the update we've been waiting for (you may have found it months ago lol) but if you didn't, I'm glad I could help save you the pain in the ass this drive has become. Below is the link to the page with the LG GSA T50L Multi-Disk ODD. It's SR09, and from what I've heard, it fixes everything. Happy reintroduction to burning lol..

This post was a month ago, but I am curious as to if the firmware cured the DVD-ROM problems? I also made a reply on the same launchpad post you reference in your post.

I have the same laptop with the same drive, but I am unable to find which firmware the drive currently has. I will try and grab the firmware you mention, and report back.

Not sure about windows. In linux, “hdparm -i /dev/scd0″ will work for most people.
